Just drink your water, Melissa, it makes everything easier!

Habits are such funny things. The good ones are hard to keep up and the not so good ones are oh so easy and comfortable to fall back into. Drinking water and making sure I drink enough water is one of those good habits that I very easily fall out of. After my gastric bypass I was recommended to drink 2-3L of water a day and I’m sure we get those recommendations for good reason.

I have made a very conscious effort to try and increase my water intake this week. For the last couple of months there had been more days than there should be where coffee was the only liquid I drunk all day and I knew I could not continue like that. As well as the not drinking enough, or any, water I have also been snacking. I know I shouldn’t snack but I’ve fallen back into that habit and it has been so hard to break. So. Many. Bad. Habits.

I’ve started reducing the amount I have been breastfeeding and I know when I stop completely I will really need to get back on top of my diet again. My actual meals are pretty good but I need to cut the snacks out. I have been trying and failing not to snack these last couple of weeks but seeing my weight start to climb a little bit with the reduction in breastfeeding has made me really reassess where I’m at. It basically gave me a big kick up the bum.

This week I decided to really focus on water. I set myself a goal to drink at least 2L of water each day. I figured since I wasn’t having any luck with the no snacking that I should try and sort another bad habit out. Just making an effort to always have a water bottle with me and setting times throughout the day when I want to have drunk a certain amount by has made it so much easier. I’ve been getting my water in and I feel SO much better for it.

In a great coincidence because I’ve upped my water intake and have been drinking throughout the morning and afternoon I’ve found it so much easier not to snack. I find if I can get to lunchtime without snacking the rest of the day is easier and I’ve done it three days in a row now. I think I was mistaking thirst for hunger and I haven’t been needing to stop myself snacking, I’ve had no desire to. Why didn’t I think of this earlier!

I always find it hard to drink enough water over winter, it’s cold and I just don’t feel like it a lot of the time. Hopefully now that summer is on its way back I will find it easier to keep my water intake up over the next few months. I feel so much better for it and if it makes everything else easier then I have more motivation to do it.

Do you struggle to get enough water in over winter? Comment below and tell me your best tip that helps you drink lots of water!

That’s a great idea! It’s not the water I struggle with, I don’t mind plain water at all it’s just the habits slipping. It could be a good incentive to get me back on the train when it all seems to hard though.

Thanks for my ‘kick up the bum’. I am shocking with the fluid intake also. The only way I manage it properly is to have an alarm on my phone using the timer. 8 half hour or 8 hour periods and my 2l is done. I have tried all those apps which should help me but I don’t find I stick to them. It is much harder to ignore an annoying alarm than some quite reminder which goes once and then just sits there on your phone until you see it.

Apps are too easy to ignore aren’t they. I’m glad you found a way that works for you by setting the phone alarm. Hopefully with it getting warmer it won’t be such a struggle to get the water in!

Thank you for your blog. I have just discovered you.
I had a gastric sleeve on the 12th December 2018
I have already stalled at the dreaded 3 weeks. My dietitian has recommended more protein and I am now using Boidez protein water. It’s easy to drink, sugar free and helps with getting both protein and fluid intake up.
I hope this works for me and gets me out of the stall state I am in. It’s soul destroying.

Hello Caroline, I’m glad you found my blog when you needed it. So many of us stall at three weeks, it’s so difficult but it will pass. Bodiez protein water is great. I like it as an alternative to a milky protein shake. Keep on doing what you should and you’ll see the scales move again soon.
