Melissa Loses It is expanding!

Have I got some news for you! Things are expanding around here and when I say things I really mean me. I’m going to be expanding, quite literally! I’m really happy and pleased to be able to share with you that I’m pregnant and expecting my second child! When you read this it will be a couple of months after I’ve written it. I wanted to document everything as it happens so it’s fresh in my mind.

I’m going to be posting all sorts of stuff about pregnancy and how being post-op gastric bypass influences my pregnancy. I will try and keep it to half of my content, so one pregnancy related and one unrelated post a week but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to stick to that. I hope you will find it interesting and join me for the ride! I would like to do a journal record every week so I can see how things change and develop over time.

When I got pregnant with my first son I was on Jenny Craig. I didn’t find out I was pregnant until I was nine weeks along and the minute I found out, I had to stop doing Jenny Craig. I managed to lose 20kg on that program and I think my lowest weight on it was about 112kg. Over the rest of the pregnancy I managed to put every one of those 20kg back on. After spending my first pregnancy in a morbidly obese body I didn’t want to do it again. Having my son was the main motivation that drove me to having gastric bypass surgery.

I’m taking a wild guess here but I think pregnancy after gastric bypass is going to be completely different. There’s the obvious things like it’s going to be more apparent I have a baby bump not just look like I ate too many pies for ages. But I’m curious to see how different it will be and just how much more I’m going to learn about my after bypass body. You all know me by now, I’m pretty open and I will share any and everything that I think could be of value for someone else.

As I sit here writing this I’ve confirmed today with home pregnancy tests that I am indeed pregnant. I think I’m about four weeks along and I’ve booked a doctor’s appointment for a week’s time to get that side of everything going. When I didn’t think anyone was watching me today I had a big dumb smile on my face, while I took time to soak it in. It only took four positive home pregnancy tests (three different kinds) for me to fully convince myself and my husband that I’m expecting.

Pregnancy, Four Weeks Pregnant,

There are some things I think will be particularly interesting about a pregnancy after gastric bypass journey. How am I going to handle putting on weight again? Even if it is needed to some degree while you’re pregnant. What the heck am I going to eat? The pregnancy diet rules out about 80% of the things I eat regularly. Is it going to further wreck my body or did I do enough damage when I was morbidly obese? Will this pregnancy develop complications like my last one did? These are just a few of the things that have been going through my mind.

I’m already struggling with keeping my mouth shut and we’re really looking forward to Mother’s Day (it’s a few weeks away as I write this) because we are going to tell our son, our parents and some close friends and family what’s going on! Thanks for reading and joining me on this ride, after all I’m busy making a person over here!
