The best NSV I’ve had so far!

Life after bariatric surgery has been filled with numerous NSVs, to the uninitiated that’s a non-scale victory! Basically any of the little things that happen like being able to cross your legs over again, having to move the seat forward in your car and everything else that’s a freaking awesome achievement but is not tied to the numbers on the scale.

I had the absolute best NSV happen the other day. I was about to head out the door for a run and my four-year-old had a huge tantrum because he wanted to come for a run with me. I was so surprised and felt so mean telling him he couldn’t come. It was his dinner time and taking a four-year-old for a 5 kilometre run is probably not the best idea, let’s face it. My husband had to come and peel him off my leg so I could get out the door without him.

Thinking about it later I realised it’s the best NSV I’ve had so far. One of my biggest reasons and motivations for having my surgery was him. Having him and then my perspective on everything changing was absolutely the catalyst for me starting to take the thought of weight loss surgery seriously and it was him I wanted to make the changes for. I wanted to be around for as much of his life as possible and I really wanted to be the best mum I could be. I knew being morbidly obese that I wasn’t going to be able to participate in his life to the full extent that I could if I was a normal weight.

I wanted to demonstrate healthy habits and a healthy lifestyle for him and I knew exercise and being active was a big part of that. When I was morbidly obese I could and did exercise but it was quite hard and I did not enjoy in the slightest. I used to joke I was allergic to exercise and find basically any excuse not to exercise. As I lost weight and found that exercise got dramatically easier and that I actually enjoyed it I knew I had done the right thing. Exercise and being active is now one of my main priorities in life and my little guy is starting to pick up on it and I couldn’t be happier.

And he’s off!

I felt so mean saying no to him coming for a run with me that I came up with a plan, I would take him for a ‘run’ on Saturday morning and when I asked him if he wanted to come he was so keen. He talked about it lots for the next couple of days and could not get ready fast enough when the time came. We did a short single kilometre around the block and he ran basically the whole way. I asked him if he wanted to walk a couple of times but he was happy to carry on running. I think next time I’d push it out to 1.5 kilometres and see how he goes.

Our Mummy and Son run in progress!

We regularly go for walks as a family and enjoy the time spent together but I was stoked when he was so interested and then actually enjoyed going for a ‘run’ with me. I’m so proud of him and to be honest, of myself. My habits and lifestyle have totally changed and that’s for the better for me and my family. If there was one tip I could give him though it would be that he could probably run faster if he didn’t talk the entire time! He’s a chatty wee thing and he didn’t stop the whole time.

What’s been your absolute favourite NSV so far in your bariatric journey? Comment below and let me know, it’s a journey filled with ups and downs so it’s important to celebrate our successes!

He really enjoyed it and did so much better than I expected!I avoided PE at school as much as possible too and I never saw exercise and activity as a regular habit for either of my parents.

I’m glad to have found your blog. I have been a weight loss blogger since about 2009 and finally, despite many years of saying it would be a last resort…I’m taking it.
