Nothing Naughty’s Protein Bars Review

I have been spending a lot of time at Auckland Hospital lately and of course out of boredom I spent a bit of time perusing the small selection of shops there. Right in the entrance foyer there is a shop called Makete and they stock a big range of more healthy than usual snacks.

I, of course, gravitated straight to the protein section and found a good selection of protein bars and powders. They stock a brand of protein bars that I haven’t come across before and I got a few to try out. The first thing that struck me was the price, $2.50 for a protein bar say whattttt!

Of course because they were so cheap I had to check the back straight away to see how much protein was in them. Per 40 gram bar there is 15 or 16 grams of protein which is pretty good. They are really low in sugar too with only 5 grams of sugar per bar. The fat content is also really low with only 3 grams of fat per bar. Nutritionally these protein bars stack up pretty well.

These bars are also super yummy! I have tried the Chocolate Mint, Chocolate Caramel and Chocolate Strawberry flavours so far and all three of them were really yummy. My favourite out of those three was the chocolate mint but it was a really hard choice. These bars have more of a cereal bar consistency so are easy to eat in terms of chewing to death and don’t stick around the inside of your mouth.

There is also vanilla bean, chocolate fudge and chocolate pineapple (hello pineapple lumps) flavours of the bars which I am yet to try but will make sure I get around to trying soon. If you buy a box of bars straight from Nothing Naughty it is only $27.00 for a box of 12 with free delivery. This works out to it being $2.25 per bar and with free delivery it doesn’t get any better than that.

These bars are also gluten-free, don’t have any artificial flavours or sweeteners and are made here in NZ down in Tauranga! I had a look at their website and they have some interesting looking protein powders in varieties such as pea, whey and rice protein which I think I might have to try too.

Overall these bars have been a great find for me and I have been back since to stock up since I first found them. At $2.50 per bar it’s too easy to grab five or six to keep on hand. These bars are yummy, priced really well and stack up nutritionally really well so I rate them 5/5! Good work Nothing Naughty, I love supporting NZ companies that are doing really great things.

Have you tried these protein bars yet? Let me know what you thought of them. If you give them a go because of this post let me know which flavour was your favourite in the comments below!

Hi Sharon, Thanks for reading and commenting on my blog! I’m not sure if there are any supermarkets in Auckland that stock them. The only place I’ve seen them is at the hospital. I will try and find out for you though.

Hi Sharon, I have heard back from Nothing Naughty and they don’t sell their bars in supermarkets in an effort to keep their prices down. You can get them online from their website ( I included the link in the post) and a box of bars has free shipping. There are a few other small stockists like Makete at Auckland Hospital but that’s it. Hopefully that’s helpful!

My favourite is the pineapple and are great for the 2 o’clock munchies. Eating one around this time should help you get to dinner time without scoffing rubbish. I get mine from the gym which is in Te Awamutu for $2.50. A great tasting bar full of good stuff that is reasonable and has chocolate in it.

The pineapple one is like a giant Pineapple Lump isn’t it Cass! I’m glad to hear you like them too, they are certainly one of the nicest and most cost effective protein bars I’ve found so far.

Hiya! I’ve just tried these delicious bars but am a bit worried about the third ingredient being brown rice syrup plus apparently these bars have a hi-GI. What are your thoughts on this?

    • Melissa Peaks Author at 12:25 pm

Hey, I’m glad you like them too. Personally those aren’t things I am concerned about. I do always advocate reading food labels to enable you to make an informed decision for yourself, we all have different dietary requirements and priorities and we need to be aware of what we’re consuming. These bars tick the boxes I need them to and suit my dietary requirements as a post-op gastric bypass patient.
